Partnership Profile: Nearmap

Discover how Ecopia's partnership with Nearmap is supporting a wide range of applications for civil engineering firms, government agencies, and other organizations requiring high-precision geospatial data.

Nearmap + Ecopia: Turning imagery into insights, and insights into answers

Nearmap is the trusted source of location intelligence that empowers organizations to see the world as it is today - and plan for the world of tomorrow. In the United States, Nearmap captures over 1.8 million unique square miles of urban areas each year, covering 87% of the US population. Using patented camera systems and advanced processing, Nearmap imagery achieves ground sampling resolution of 3.1–7cm per pixel and is updated up to three times per year in major metro areas.

This unmatched clarity, accuracy, frequency, and coverage provides Ecopia’s AI-powered mapping systems with the highest quality foundation for creating comprehensive, up-to-date vector datasets - at scale.

Through this partnership, Ecopia customers gain access to the most precise and current visual data, seamlessly delivered via cloud applications and APIs. Together, Nearmap and Ecopia deliver more than imagery. We help surface the insights and answers that help governments, civil engineering firms, and enterprises make confident decisions, reduce risk, and accelerate outcomes.

Nearmap is built on the belief that a better tomorrow starts with better insights. By delivering location intelligence solutions that provide change-makers with data-driven certainty, Nearmap transforms imagery into insights, and insights into answers.

Building unprecedented datasets with AI and aerial imagery

Using recent developments in Ecopia’s AI-based mapping technology, Ecopia and Nearmap have partnered to launch off-the-shelf 3D Land Cover and Advanced Transportation Feature data. This offering provides instant access to high-precision mapping data for America’s largest population centers.

Available across the 400 most populous cities in the US, Ecopia’s off-the-shelf land cover data features 17 standardized vector layers that capture both natural and built environments in detail. Available in both 2D and 3D, this data supports a wide range of applications in land use planning, climate resilience, infrastructure development, risk assessment, and beyond.

Similarly extracted from Nearmap high-resolution imagery, Ecopia’s off-the-shelf Advanced Transportation Features dataset provides critical transportation infrastructure such as sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, turn lanes, medians, intersections, and more. Also available across the 400 most populous cities in the US, these features provide planimetric-level detail at scale for metropolitan planning organizations, departments of transportation, civil engineering firms, and similar organizations to leverage in their analysis and decision-making.

In addition to off-the-shelf offerings, Ecopia also offers custom Global Feature Extraction services leveraging Nearmap imagery. Wherever Nearmap imagery is available, Ecopia’s AI-powered mapping systems can digitize every detectable feature within the source data, delivering vector maps with >95% geometric accuracy, produced efficiently at scale.

Empowering civil engineers with planimetric-level detail

High-precision geospatial data produced by Ecopia’s AI-powered mapping systems from Nearmap imagery helps civil engineers design, maintain, and enhance infrastructure. In the past, civil engineering firms have spent thousands of hours manually digitizing features for projects. Today, civil engineers are streamlining workflows and accelerating project timelines with AI-generated planimetric land cover and transportation data.

This data supports complex transportation, stormwater, and utility projects, enabling civil engineers to provide the best available information to help achieve their clients' objectives. For instance, civil engineering firms supporting urban planning projects are able to efficiently analyze features like green space, sidewalks, and bike lanes, informing recommendations on how to improve access throughout the community. Similarly, firms consulting on the establishment of stormwater utility fees are developing data-driven fee structures based on the amount of impervious surface on a given property.

Informing geospatial decision-making in the public sector

This high-precision geospatial data is also being used across the public sector, supporting a wide range of applications, including stormwater management, transportation planning, public safety, tax assessment, and more. For years, governments have faced challenges with outdated mapping data and the time-consuming process of manual digitization. Ecopia’s AI-powered mapping data, generated using Nearmap imagery, helps address this challenge by delivering up-to-date, accurate data at scale.

In stormwater and flood management, impervious surface data helps support infrastructure improvements, predict runoff, model flood risks, and inform stormwater utility fees. For transportation planning, municipalities and states leverage advanced transportation features to support infrastructure planning, enhance pedestrian safety, ensure ADA compliance, and advance Vision Zero goals.

Public safety agencies also rely on this data to support 911 mapping and emergency response, as well as identify 3D bridge structures for escape routes in the event of a natural disaster. Moreover, accurate building footprints enable local governments to more precisely assess property values based on structure size, type, and location, supporting tax assessment.
