Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization Leverages Ecopia Transportation Data to Develop Safer Streets

Ecopia AI provides the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization with high-precision transportation data, including sidewalks, curb ramps, and crosswalks.

March 17, 2026 - Toronto - Today, Ecopia AI (Ecopia) announces the delivery of high-precision transportation mapping data to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization (IMPO), providing a comprehensive, accurate, and up-to-date dataset to support transportation planning across Central Indiana.

IMPO is Central Indiana’s federally designated regional planning agency, responsible for developing short and long-range plans that support local governments and advance the region’s goals in transportation, economic development, housing, safety, sustainability, and other quality-of-life initiatives. The organization collects, analyzes, and communicates regional data to inform planning efforts and guide decision-making, while also tracking and distributing grant funding to local governments for the planning and construction of roads, trails, transit, and other infrastructure that moves people and goods throughout the region.

Spanning nearly 1,500 square miles and serving over 1.7 million residents, IMPO’s planning region includes Marion County and portions of Boone, Hancock, Hamilton, Hendricks, Johnson, Morgan, and Shelby counties.

IMPO first became aware of Ecopia through the company’s work with Hamilton County, a local public agency member. Through that engagement, Ecopia produced 2D and 3D land cover data across the county to support a wide range of critical GIS initiatives, including hydrological modeling, urban planning, emergency response, infrastructure development, and environmental management.

Ecopia’s AI-powered mapping systems ingest high-resolution imagery to automatically generate detailed vector layers of virtually any natural or man-made feature. Ecopia’s map engine delivers geospatial data with the accuracy of a trained GIS professional, but in a fraction of the time required for manual digitization. These accelerated timelines not only save valuable time and resources for GIS teams but also ensure data is put to use before it becomes stale and can easily be updated to reflect real-world change.

Impressed by the precision and efficiency of Ecopia’s work in Hamilton County, IMPO partnered with Ecopia to gain a comprehensive, accurate, and up-to-date view of transportation infrastructure across the entire region.

“As a region, we didn’t have a comprehensive picture of our sidewalk networks across our 36 member agencies,” said Jennifer Dunn, Senior Data Planner at Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization. “Ecopia was able to deliver a complete, standardized dataset for the entire region, providing the insights we need to plan effectively and support safe, accessible transportation for our communities.”

The transportation data delivered by Ecopia includes key features like ADA detectable warning pads, sidewalks, and uniquely classified crosswalks, providing a detailed view of the region’s infrastructure.

These advanced transportation features will support IMPO’s Safe Streets For All (SS4A) planning grant, including updates to the Safety Action Plan. As part of this effort, a Vulnerable Road User Assessment is being conducted using Ecopia’s sidewalk, crosswalk, and ADA ramp data. This dataset will also support IMPO’s upcoming Active Transportation Plan, helping prioritize improvements for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable users across the region.

“We are proud to support the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization with high-precision transportation data,” said Thomas Peck, Senior Associate at Ecopia AI. “IMPO is leading the way in innovative transportation planning, and these highly-accurate features provide a comprehensive view of the region’s infrastructure, helping them achieve their goals and make data-driven decisions.”
